Cloud

In simple terms, the cloud refers to software and services that run on the Internet and are hosted by a provider, as opposed to running on your computer or hosted on your local site. Instead of writing the backup to a local device, the backup is redirected to a cloud service provider like Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This has been a big trend the last several years. However, before you move to the cloud for backups, perform a cost justification study. Compare this against the traditional way of doing backups and the hybrid way, which is a combination of local hard disk and disaster recovery to the cloud. I believe that the hybrid way is the sweet spot, because you just need to synchronize a copy of the weekly backups to the cloud, and it’s a lot easier and cheaper then sending tapes offsite.
